MASKS FOR BOULDER VALLEY WOMEN’S HEALTH CENTER

Calling all sewers and crafters! With BVWHC patients and staff now required to wear masks, we are in short supply. If you can help create masks, either with or without filter pockets, please see instructions below.

Our main concern is that our masks are functional and will protect the safety of our staff and patients. It is completely fine to have non-matching fabrics, thread, and binding strips, but a well-sewn mask with no frayed edges, missed seams or holes is important.

INSTRUCTIONS

In order to make sure the masks are as safe and effective as possible, please follow these instructions closely:

Sewing Pattern:

We are in need of both standard masks for patients and masks that have a filter pocket for staff. Please use the tutorials below when making your masks, as it is most helpful to use a standard pattern to ensure proper fit and function.

Fabric:

  • Recommended fabric for the outer portion of the mask includes heaver, non-stretch fabric such as denim, duck cloth, canvas, twill, or other tightly woven cotton fabric.
  • Recommended fabric for the inner lining and filter pocket can be other cotton, cotton-blend non-stretch fabric. It can be thinner and softer, but again recommended minimal or non-stretch.
  • Fabric must be laundered in HOT water prior to sewing to prevent future shrinkage.
  • Polyester or other less breathable fabric will NOT work as well, due to moisture produced when breathing.
  • If using denim or other fabric that is being “recycled”, please be sure it is clean and in good shape. Worn or dirty fabric will not be protective.
  • Fabric ties can be sewn on the mask. There will need to be four ties (one tie on each of the four corners). Ties should be approx. ¼ inch in width, sewn in such a way that there are no frayed edges, and long enough to be tied into a bow behind the head. Healthcare workers have reported that elastic bands behind the ears are painful.
